The Slide That Started Everything

In 2020, during the COVID-19 shutdowns, Matthew Billington discovered the inflatable industry in an unexpected way. As a longtime business leader with a background managing large-scale operations at Fastenal—overseeing millions in sales, hundreds of employees, and complex operations including HR, inventory, leasing, importing, and international manufacturing—Matthew had the business acumen but had never considered inflatables as an opportunity.

That changed after experiencing the joy of a backyard waterslide with his kids and neighbors. He decided to purchase one of his own—a massive 27-foot tall, 63-foot-long slide. What started as family fun quickly turned into a business opportunity.

From Family Fun to Business Success

On advice from the seller, Matthew began renting out his slide. What he thought might take two years to pay off was covered in just five weekends. The demand was undeniable.

Within three months, Matthew had grown his rental inventory to 28 units. But with his background in manufacturing—including experience traveling to factories in China and managing large teams—he saw ways the products could be improved.

Creating Our Own Path

In late 2020, Matthew designed and commissioned his own inflatables, originally planning to keep a few and sell the extras. The demand was so strong that before the shipment even arrived, nearly every unit was sold.

By 2021, Big and Bright Inflatables was officially born, alongside Big and Bright Party Rentals. Orders grew quickly—from 30 units, to 65, to even more—and the business gained momentum. At the end of that year, the rental company was sold so that full attention could go into designing and manufacturing inflatables for the party rental industry.

Rapid Growth and Full Commitment

In 2022, Big and Bright Inflatables more than doubled in size. By 2023, Matthew made the decision to leave his successful career at Fastenal to focus on the company full-time.

That same year, the company became a true family business when Matthew's brother-in-law Joe Taravella joined as creative director, bringing a new energy to the brand through innovative designs and eye-catching video marketing.
